Predators lose loose ball battle against Smash
By Jeff D’Andrea paNOW Staff

The game was right there bouncing in front of the Prince Albert Predators, they just couldn’t pick it up.

The Predators lost their home opener 9-8 to the Saskatoon Smash at the Kinsmen Sunday, mostly because they couldn’t control the loose balls.

In the third period alone, the Smash scored two goals directly off of face offs, in which they corralled the loose ball and were able to transition to easy scoring chances.

PA’s Byrne split seconds away from Clunie-Cooper PBR victory
By Jeff D’Andrea paNOW Staff

Prince Albert’s Tanner Byrne was agonizingly close from winning a championship at his hometown event, the Clunie-Cooper Memorial Professional Bull Riding Event Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre.

After riding an 84.5 on bull Propper Ripped in the preliminary round Saturday, Byrne was bucked off in the final of eight seconds of hell riding bull Axis of Evil. Had he stayed on, he would have been declared the event’s champion.

Stetson Lawrence leads after the first day of the 8th Annual Clunie-Cooper Memorial Professional Bull Riding Friday at the Art Hauser Centre.

Lawrence scored an 89 in his preliminary run on bull Chances Are.

Local Tanner Byrne wasn't too far behind as he placed third, scoring 85.5 on Ginghas Kong.

None of the top-ten riders completed their final run as the 10 bulls in the Lipsett Cartage Finals turned out to be too tough.

The second and final day of the Clunie-Cooper Memorial will take place 7:30 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Astros finished second in last year’s boys westerns in Maple Ridge, B.C., losing in the finals to the Saskatoon Phantoms 9-4.

But returning player Cameron Leblanc said his team is looking forward to the home field advantage and the challenges of playing against good teams.

paNOW staff

Although the Prince Albert Predators are in the junior ranks, if Saturday is any indication, they could probably win a few games at the senior level.

They lost by just a goal 18-17 against the senior Saskatoon Brewers Saturday at the Kinsmen in their final exhibition game of the season.

The final roster will be produced during Monday’s practice for the Predators, with their preseason concluding on Wednesday.

The Predators’ first home game will be May 12 against the Saskatoon Smash.

Diefen-Break-Hers finally play first home game after two years of waiting
Diefen-Break-Hers finally play first home game after two years of waiting
By Jeff D’Andrea paNOW Staff

For most, watching the roller derby game was something to do on a Saturday night, but for Collette Kadziolka, it was much more than that.

The captain of the NorSask Diefen-Break-Hers has been with the team since it formed in December of 2011, but had yet to play a game in her hometown of Prince Albert.

That finally changed on Saturday when her Diefen-Break-Hers played the Saskatoon Killa Bee’s at the Dave G. Steuart Arena.
