At The Movies With Maxwell

Star Trek: Into Darkness boldly dares to go where no Star Trek movie has gone before. The special effects are incredible, the casting is superb, and the storyline will keep you guessing from beginning to end. I loved it.

Is this the best Star Trek to date? I don't think so but then again I was always more of a fan of the Next Generation. Critics of the first movie said that it didn't true to the original. I think the critics will be a lot more satisfied this time around. Zachary Quinto does an uncanny job as Spock. His likeness to Leonard Nimoy is almost comical.

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is a story about secrets, true love, and trying to re-live the past. Set in the 1920s, the audience is transported to a time of wealth and celebration. The war is over, the stock market is booming, and the parties last all night.

To be honest I was expecting this movie to be better. I suppose expectations are greater when you read everyone else’s reviews first on Facebook and Twitter. Don’t get me wrong, “Iron Man 3” is still a very slick movie. It is worth watching once, twice, even three times. It is packed full of big explosions, witty one-liners, and special effects that will blow your mind.

The plot of this movie is so absurd and crazy, you have to question how it could possibly be based on real events that transpired in the 1990’s. “Pain and Gain” had me laughing from beginning to end.

Essentially this is the story of three bodybuilders in Florida who devise a scheme to get rich. They kidnap a wealthy businessman with the goal of taking over his possessions. Their plan may have succeeded if they had not been such dumb criminals. Every screw-up is followed by a bigger screw-up.

"42" hits a home run. It was everything I had hoped it would be and more. Mark my words Harrison Ford will get a nod for an Oscar next year.

Scary Movie 5

This movie is filled with lame, tasteless jokes; but I can’t say I wasn't expecting anything less. There are some laugh-out-loud moments, but there are just as many just-plain-dumb moments. It's not the worst movie I have seen this year but I definitely will not be waiting for it to be released on blue-ray.

Anyone who doubts the mass appeal of professional wrestling, needs to consider Sunday night’s attendance at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey. 80,676 fans packed the stadium for the show. The event itself grossed over $12 million dollars. Can you dig that?

Rather than run down every match, I am going to simply give what I felt were the big hits and misses.

First the misses…

With big guns, and big explosions, GI Joe: Retaliation is pretty much everything you would expect from a movie based on a toy franchise. The plot seems like something contrived by two young boys, but the fight scene choreography and special effects are incredible. There is one particular ninja battle worth noting that takes place on the side of a mountain.

This may possibly be the best movie I have seen in a while. My heart is still pounding. Basically summed up, it is “Die Hard” in the White House. The action is non-stop and Gerard Butler proves he can be every bit as tough and cool as Bruce Willis.

There was nothing magical about this movie, but it does have a certain charm. Steve Carell and Jim Carrey make a great combination that will have you laughing for nearly a solid two hours.
